Facies analysis of Zechstein 2 carbonates

 

The aim of this study is the creation of a high-resolution facies model based on outcrop data and cored drill holes representing Zechstein 2 carbonates (Ca2) from a quarry in the southwestern Harz Mountains in northern Germany. The Zechstein 2 carbonates are an important research topic as they are among the most prolific reservoir rocks in northern Germany. Their reservoir quality is defined by facies and mineralogy.

This study integrates outcrop and near-surface drill hole data as well as geoelectric transects into a subsurface model. Data derived from core analysis include porosity and permeability measurements of selected core samples, rock properties derived from spectral gamma ray measurements and detailed thin section analyses.

The model and dataset can be used for analogue comparisons to known subsurface Ca2 models and provide new insights into the spatial distribution and transition of the different facies types.
